SPLIT, 8 July 2025 – A powerful and sudden storm swept through the city of Split on Tuesday morning, leaving behind a trail of destruction across the city and its port.
What started as a darkening sky early in the morning quickly escalated into a violent weather event around 8:50 a.m.
Residents were caught off guard as gale-force winds, hail and heavy rain descended in a matter of seconds.
Eyewitnesses described the storm as unlike anything they had ever experienced.
“It came out of nowhere and disappeared just as quickly, but the damage it left behind is significant,” one local resident said.
Streets across Split were quickly flooded, with water flowing down main roads and branches scattered across pavements.
Emergency services were dispatched throughout the city as sirens echoed and residents made numerous calls for assistance.

On the city’s roads, large puddles and blocked drains created hazardous driving conditions. There were also reports of power outages in some areas.
The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

The storm also had a dramatic impact on the Port of Split. Around 9 a.m., the Jadrolinija ferry Petar Hektorović broke free from its moorings due to the strong winds. It first struck the Krilo catamaran before crashing into a large tourist excursion vessel, which subsequently sank.

Hajduk Split cancelled a planned press conference scheduled for noon, which was meant to present the club’s first summer signing.
Instead, media representatives were invited to Poljud Stadium at the same time to document the damage caused by the storm.
Parts of the stage from the Ultra Europe festival, which is set to start this week, destroyed cars in the parking lot.
