The Croatian coast is peppered with stunning, crystal clear beaches. One of the most famous is Sakarun. Sakarun is located on the northwest coast of the island of Dugi Otok.

Sometimes called the Caribbean of the Adriatic because of the whiteness of the sand and turquoise sea, Sakarun is situated close to Veli Rat, Veruni, Soline and Božava.

Around 800 meters long and at some 250 meters from the shore it is 3.5 meters deep, which means that the swimming area is extremely large and shallow and suitable for kids.

The seabed is rich in Posidonia oceanica, commonly known as Neptune grass or Mediterranean tapeweed, which is a seagrass species that is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea.

It forms large underwater meadows that are an important part of the ecosystem. Seaweed is no longer cleaned from the beach, in order to prevent erosion. Biodiversity is one of the reasons why Sakarun is protected within the Northwestern part of Dugi otok in the category of significant landscape.
