After an illustrious 13-year spell with Real Madrid, Luka Modrić has begun a new chapter in his career with AC Milan.
Modrić was welcomed by thousands of passionate Milan fans who gathered in the heart of the city earlier this week.
His move to Milan has sparked excitement and pride among fans of the club, who see him as a player who will bring not only quality on the pitch but also leadership, discipline and a winning mentality to the dressing room.
Modrić quickly began meeting his new teammates, including Christian Pulisic, who was born in the United States but has Croatian roots. His grandfather, Mate, was born on the island of Olib near Zadar.
The two players greeted each other with a smile and a hug, with Modrić asking whether Pulisic spoke Croatian.
“No, the only Croatian thing I have is the passport,” Pulisic laughed.
He obtained his Croatian passport eight years ago while playing for Borussia Dortmund, primarily to ease the process of acquiring a work visa in Europe as a European Union citizen.
At one point, the Croatian Football Federation expressed interest in securing him for the national team, but Pulisic chose to represent the United States.
“I have been to Zagreb a few times and I really liked it. It is a beautiful country and I am proud of my Croatian roots. I visited with my grandfather and it was a wonderful experience,” Pulisic said in an earlier interview.
