VIDEO: Advent in Zagreb officially opens with lighting of first candle

The lighting of the first advent candle at Manduševac fountain on Ban Jelačić Square has signalled the start of the 2022-23 Advent in Zagreb. 

At 5 pm on Saturday afternoon, the first advent candle was lit. A big crowed gathered on Ban Jelačić Square as the first advent candle was lit on Saturday afternoon.

Mayor Tomislav Tomašević and Director of the Zagreb Tourist Board, Martina Bienenfeld, both addressed the crowd. 

Advent in Zagreb will take place over 43 days and at 20 locations. It will close on 7 January 2023.

Ice Park on Kralj Tomislav Square (Tomislavac) and Advent in the Zoo return this year, whilst there are also three new locations – Dr. Franjo Tuđman Square, Grič Park and in the new pedestrian zone in Stara Vlaška street. Advent in the Zoo also makes its return this year.

The most beautiful Christmas lights, which light up Zrinjevac, are also turned on tonight.

“More than 100 concerts will be held in closed and open city spaces and on squares and streets. There will be exhibitions in museums and galleries and the cooperation with the HNK in Zagreb, the Croatian Chamber of Crafts and the Zagreb Zoo, they are also preparing special programs,” said Bienenfeld.
