Last week Valentina Aščić fulfilled her sporting dreams and wrote Croatian sports history when she became the first Croatian speed skater to perform at a Winter Olympic Games.

On the last day of the competition at the Winter Olympics for short track speed skaters, races were held in the 1500m discipline for women with Valentina competing against the 36 best speed skaters in the world.

The 23-year-old unfortunately failed by just 178 thousandths of a second to place among the best 22 skaters to advance through to the semi-finals, but she did set new Croatian record with her time, beating the old record by over 5 seconds.

Valentina finished 26th overall but it was a good achievement for Croatia’s debut at the event.

Valentina and the coach of the Croatian national team Ingmar van Riel are returning today from Beijing to Belgium, where they will prepare together with the other members of the Croatian national team for the upcoming World Cup, which will be held in Montreal on March 18.
