NEW YORK, 31 August 2019 – Marin Cilic has moved into the last 16 of the US Open after a four-set win over 14th seed John Isner on Saturday.

The former champion needed just over three hours to see off the American’s challenge, winning 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.

In the opening set, Cilic would break at 5-5 first with a forehand winner and then serve out to take the opening set 7-5.

The second set went with serve early on before Isner broke at 3-2 to go 4-2 up. The one break would be all he would need to level the match at one set all.

Neither player gave an inch in the third set, holding serve throughout and it would have to be settled in a tie-break. Cilic would take the tie-break after Isner double-faulted at 6-7.

Cilic would break in the third game of the fourth set with a forehand winner to race out to a 3-1 lead. Cilic, who hit 20 aces in the match, would serve out for the victory and set up a last 16 meeting with 2nd seed Rafael Nadal.
