United Cup: Croatia edged by Greece in City Final in Perth

PERTH, 4 January 2023 – Croatia has been beaten by Greece 3-2 in the Perth City Final of the United Cup on Wednesday. 

Croatia, who topped Group F to reach the City Final after wins against Argentina and France, took a 1-0 lead when Donna Vekić comfortably beat Despina Papamichail 6-2, 6-0.

Greece then pulled it back to 1-1 when Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Borna Ćorić in a thriller. Tsitsipas would take the first set with ease 6-0, before the Croatian took the second in a tiebreak. The Greek would eventually take an enthralling match when he won the decider 7-5. 

Maria Sakkari then made it 2-1 to Greece when she beat Petra Martić in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, before the in-form Borna Gojo made it 2-2 with a great win over Stefanos Sakellaridis 6-4, 6-2.

Martić and Gojo then teamed up for the deciding doubles tie against Tsitsipas and Sakkari and it would be the Greeks who would prevail, winning in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 to win the match 3-2.

Greece now joins USA, Poland and Italy in the Final Four which commences in Sydney on Friday at the Ken Rosewall Arena.
