UEFA Europa League: Osijek knocked out after penalty shootout

OSIJEK, 1 August 2019 – Croatian cub NK Osijek have lost their UEFA Europa League second qualifying round tie against CSKA Sofia after a dramatic penalty shootout at Gradski Vrt stadium in Osijek on Thursday night.

A stunning goal from Brazilian striker Evandro last week in the Bulgarian capital gave CSKA a 1-0 lead heading into the second leg of the tie tonight.

Osijek started the second leg the stronger and more hungrier of the two sides and were rewarded in the 28th minute when Ante Majstorovic headed home to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

CSKA were not in the match in the first half as Osijek continued to press and look for a second goal.

Despite enjoying most of the possession in the second half also, Osijek could not find a way through and the match headed into extra-time with the score locked at 1-1.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in extra-time and the tie would head to penalties which CSKA would win 4-3 to give them a 5:4 win on aggregate.

In the third qualifying round, CSKA will face Ukrainian club Zorya.
