Two Croatian productions have made it into the shortlist for the 2025 European Film Awards, marking another strong year for Croatian cinema on the international stage.

The European Film Academy has unveiled a list of 67 feature-length films – including 44 fiction, 15 documentaries and 8 animated works – that will now be considered for nomination by more than 5,400 Academy members.

Among the selected titles are Fiume o morte! by Igor Bezinović and Good Girls (Dobre djevojke) by Urška Djukić, the Croatian Audiovisual Center said.

The acclaimed documentary Fiume o morte! (Restart), already the winner of 19 domestic and international awards, continues its impressive journey.

Producer Vanja Jambrović expressed her pride, saying the film’s success “confirms how powerfully it communicates internationally, both through its directorial originality and its timely theme of dictatorship and occupation.”

Having premiered at the prestigious Rotterdam Film Festival, where it took home both the main prize and the FIPRESCI Award, the film has since travelled the globe, screening at nearly 50 festivals and earning numerous honours, including six Golden Arenas at the Pula Film Festival.

In recent weeks alone, it has collected five more awards across Europe.

Fiume o morte! has also enjoyed box-office success in Croatia, drawing almost 40,000 viewers, and will soon be distributed in UK and Irish cinemas by ICA Cinema. The film is Croatia’s official submission for both the Academy Awards and Spain’s Goya Awards.

Alongside it, the minority co-production Good Girls (365 Films) by Slovenian director Urška Djukić premiered in the competitive Perspectives 75 section at the Berlinale and later triumphed at Tribeca, winning Best Cinematography.

The film has also screened at major European festivals in Karlovy Vary and Sofia and will be released in Croatian cinemas on 23 October through Hulahop.

Final nominations for the European Film Awards will be announced live from Seville’s Real Alcázar on 18 November.
