State-owned broadcaster Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) will launch a TV channel for Croatians around the world.

HRT will launch the TV channel HRT – HTV 5 for expat Croats and Croats living around the world in January 2018. The channel will also be intended for the international public.

The new channel is expected to be broadcast on satellite and internet platforms and feature dedicated programmes for Croatians abroad, as well as cultural and tourism promotional documentaries in foreign languages (English, Spanish, German) for the international public.

In terms of content on the TV channel for Croatians abroad, 25 percent will be informative programmes, 10 percent each for drama, educational and scientific, music and culture programmes.

At least 7 percent of content is expected to be entertainment programmes, with 0.5 percent dedicated to religious programmes. How much sports content has yet to be determined.

“At this point, we can not give more technical details, but we point out that HRT’s service as a public media service is of great importance to better informing Croatians outside of the Republic of Croatia,” the Zagreb-based broadcaster told Hina, Jutarnji List reported.

According to plans, HRT5 will broadcast 24 hours a day.

Earlier this year HRT launched its new-look evening news in English programme on HRT 4.
