While much of Croatia embraces the peak of summer through its islands and coastline, the town of Gospić, the heart of the Lika region, marks 22 July in a quieter but equally meaningful way.
This date is celebrated as Dan Grada – Town Day – in honour of Saint Mary Magdalene, the town’s patron saint.
For the people of Gospić, this day is more than a reminder of its founding. It is a celebration of the town’s identity – deeply rooted in its spiritual, cultural, natural and traditional heritage.
At a time when travellers increasingly seek authentic experiences and a return to nature, Gospić stands out as a destination offering exactly that.
A Town the Size of a Capital, with the Soul of Lika
What many may not realise is that Gospić is the largest town by area in both Croatia and Europe.
Spanning 967 square kilometres, it is geographically bigger than Berlin, Paris or Barcelona. Despite its vast size, Gospić remains modest in population, retaining its charm as the administrative, cultural and spiritual hub of Lika.
Mayor Darko Milinović, MD, says the town is steadily building its tourism story, centred around the values locals have always cherished – peace, nature, traditional flavours and simplicity.
“If you are someone who seeks more than just a holiday – authenticity, silence, greenery and hospitality – Gospić is the place for you. No crowds, no queues – here, beauty is closer than you think,” says the mayor.
Gospić is known for its rich history, striking natural beauty and cultural landmarks. A key site is the Nikola Tesla Memorial Centre in Smiljan, birthplace of the visionary inventor whose work changed the world.

Visitors can explore Tesla’s childhood home, interactive exhibits, and replicas of his laboratories. This year, the Centre marked Tesla’s birthday with a series of events, including roundtable discussions on renewable energy and his lasting legacy.

But Gospić is not only about science and history. It is also a haven for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers. From the hiking and cycling trails of Velebit, to the rivers Lika and Novčica, the area offers endless opportunities.

Lika’s traditions are also alive in its cuisine. Simple yet full of flavour, local dishes include lamb under the bell, homemade cheeses and sausages, Lika potatoes and traditional desserts. The honesty of the food reflects the spirit of the region.

Accommodation in Gospić is increasingly diverse and of high quality, ranging from private lodgings to modern campsites and hotels.
With around 1,457 beds across more than 220 properties, the town caters to a wide range of visitors. And when your stay is complete, the coast is just a 30 minute drive away – where mountain and sea can be enjoyed in the same day, stress free.

From long-standing events like Autumn in Lika and Cro Race to preparations for Advent in Gospić, the town continues to invest in its cultural and tourism offerings. Summer in Gospić features theatre performances, concerts and family programmes, all while staying true to its mission – preserving local heritage and tradition.

In an era when more travellers are turning away from well-trodden tourist paths, Gospić offers something rare – the true spirit of Lika, still undiscovered by many, but proud, authentic and ready to be explored.
