Parking in the centre of Split has become significantly more expensive, with new prices coming into effect from Thursday and further increases planned for the summer months.
At one of the city’s busiest and most popular parking areas, Stari plac, the hourly rate has doubled overnight, HRT reports.
Drivers now pay €2 for the first hour, while each additional hour costs €3. Previously, parking cost €1 per hour.
The change has not gone unnoticed. The car park, usually full, has been unusually quiet in recent days. Many drivers only discovered the new pricing upon arrival, leading to surprise and frustration.
Residents say the sudden increase has left them feeling angry and caught off guard.
Some drivers have said they now limit their stay to one hour due to the high cost, while others feel they have no alternative but to pay, particularly parents with children and those visiting the city centre for essential appointments.
Several residents noted that the empty parking spaces now make sense given the new prices, with many saying they will avoid parking there in the future.
However, the current prices are only a preview of what is to come.
From 1 May, a summer tariff will come into force. Under the seasonal pricing, the first hour of parking at Stari plac will cost €4, while every additional hour will rise to €5.
City parking officials say the increase was expected, pointing out that the car park is located in the very heart of Split.
They note that prices are being aligned with other central locations such as the waterfront and nearby historic areas. It is also emphasised that during the summer months, the majority of users are tourists and foreign visitors, and that public reaction is expected to settle over time.
Local residents remain unconvinced. Many describe the prices as excessive and say they will no longer park in the city centre. Some are already considering alternatives such as cycling, walking, or avoiding travelling into the centre by car altogether.
