8 December 2023 – Last month, Dubrovnik Airport changed is official name to the Ruđer Bošković Airport after the great Dubrovnik-born scientist. Now Split Airport has followed suit and has a new name. 

Split Airport has been named “Sveti Jeronim Airport,” named after the patron saint of the Split-Dalmatia County, the Assembly of Split Airport decided at a meeting held on Friday in Zagreb. 

The Split-Dalmatia County said in a statement that the initiative to change the name was spearheaded by County Prefect Blaženko Boban, who expressed his happiness and pride regarding this decision. 

“Our initiative has borne fruit, and I must extend my gratitude to the academic community, all church dignitaries, academics, and all people in the cultural sphere from Split and our county who have supported and endorsed us. Saint Jerome has landed at our airport!” said Boban. 

Representing the Split-Dalmatia County was the Head of the Prefect’s Cabinet, Dr. Davor Pavić, and the decision on the new name takes effect immediately.

Numerous dignitaries from the religious, cultural, and social spheres, as well as the academic community, supported County Prefect Blaženko Boban’s initiative to rename Split Airport to “Sveti Jeronim Airport” with their signatures.

Jeronim Stridonski (Jerome of Stridon) was a Christian saint, church father, and a theological teacher of the Catholic Church. He was a theologian, philosopher, hermit, and translator of the Bible into Latin. His feast day is celebrated on September 30.

He is the patron saint of Dalmatia, theologians, translators, librarians, teachers, and students.
