Located within the serene landscapes of Central Istria in Croatia lies a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered: the Sopot Waterfall.

Tucked away in the tranquil village of Sopot, this captivating natural wonder beckons visitors to immerse themselves in its pristine beauty.

The name “Sopot” originates from the Švićki Creek, where the waterfall is situated, signifying a source or spring.

The trail of St. Roko, commencing in Pićan, leads visitors through a journey intertwined with fascinating legends, culminating at the Švićki Creek, where the 24.5-meter-high waterfall stands majestically alongside a turquoise-hued pool and two observation points.

If you have yet to uncover the countless hidden treasures of Central Istria,

While a car can take you within a few hundred meters of the waterfall, with parking available in the village of Florčići, we recommend embarking on a hiking adventure along the St. Roko trail.

During the summer months, when rainfall is scarce, the creek may run dry, but the water in the pool beneath the waterfall remains.

Adjacent to the waterfall, two observation points await exploration: one dedicated to the Slavic god Perun, the ruler of the heavens positioned directly above the waterfall, and the other to his wife, the goddess of fertility and protector of women, Mokoš.

Mokoš resides halfway down the western slope towards the pool, symbolizing the junction between the earth, the underworld (represented by the god Veles), and the heavens (ruled by Perun). Legend tells of her indecision, as she dwells in the underworld during winter and ascends to the heavens in spring.

For tourists seeking to uncover new Croatian natural wonders, a visit to the Sopot Waterfall promises an unforgettable experience. When in Istria, also make sure to check out some local olive oil. Istria has been declared the world’s best olive oil region for the past 8 years.
