Snow falls across Croatia on Christmas Eve, travel warnings

Croatia has been hit by a significant change in weather on Christmas Eve, with snow falling across large parts of the country, including mountainous regions and some lowland areas.

The conditions have raised hopes of the first white Christmas since 2010.

Snow has been reported on Sljeme above Zagreb, where Medvednica’s peak has turned completely white, as well as in Lika, Gorski kotar and northern Croatia.

In places such as Bednja and parts of north-western Croatia, snowfall began early in the morning, with snow cover already forming in higher areas.

According to the Croatian Auto Club (HAK), winter driving conditions are widespread. Roads are wet, slippery and in many areas covered with snow.

Due to these conditions, traffic restrictions are in place for lorries with trailers, articulated vehicles and cars without proper winter equipment, particularly in Lika, Gorski kotar and parts of Zadar and Šibenik-Knin counties.

Drivers heading towards Dalmatia are currently advised to use the motorway, as other routes are closed.

Along the coast, strong to storm-force bura winds are causing additional difficulties, while low temperatures have led to icy patches, especially on bridges and viaducts.

Rockfalls are also possible on the Adriatic coastal road and mountain routes.

The State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) forecasts rain in inland areas is expected to turn into sleet and snow as temperatures fall, increasing the likelihood of snow cover, particularly in the north-west and mountainous regions.

In Gorski kotar and Lika, snow accumulation of 10 to 20 centimetres is possible.

On Christmas Day, colder conditions will persist inland with occasional snow, while the Adriatic will see variable cloudiness, strong bura winds and milder temperatures.

People are advised to travel with caution and follow official weather and traffic updates closely.
