The seventh edition of the Croatian Walking Festival will take place on 6 and 7 September in Gospić, and this year brings a new feature – a symbolic route passing through the Memorial Home of Dr. Ante Starčević in the village of Žitnik.
This newly introduced trail pays tribute to one of Croatia’s most influential political thinkers, offering participants a unique opportunity to connect physical activity with national heritage.
Often referred to as the “Father of the Homeland”, Ante Starčević was born in Žitnik, and walkers on this route will have the chance to step inside the authentic memorial home and experience the atmosphere of his birthplace.
The addition of this route marks a meaningful expansion of the festival’s purpose – not only promoting recreation but also celebrating cultural identity and the history of the Lika region.
In addition to the heritage route, the Croatian Walking Festival continues to offer something for everyone, with trails of varying lengths – 10+, 20+, and 30+ kilometres – suited to all ages and fitness levels.

Each route winds through the scenic and tranquil landscapes of Lika, providing a perfect mix of natural beauty, silence, and community spirit.
The festival is recognised internationally as a member of the IML Walking Association, and interest continues to grow year after year.
Over 400 participants have already registered for this year’s event, with walkers expected from all over Croatia as well as several European countries.
