Zagreb police have concluded an extensive investigation into the reported stabbing of a 35-year-old woman, determining that the incident had been falsely reported and that the injuries were self-inflicted.
The case was first made public on 29 November, following police action a day earlier when officers interviewed several individuals and carried out a series of measures to clarify the circumstances of the alleged attack.
On 1 December, shortly after being discharged from hospital, the woman filed a criminal complaint claiming she had been approached and injured by an unidentified assailant armed with a knife.
She sought medical assistance at a Zagreb hospital, where doctors confirmed she had sustained minor injuries.
However, as the investigation progressed, operational findings raised doubts about the truthfulness of her account.
Police continued with detailed checks and ultimately established that the woman had fabricated the incident.
Officers determined that she had purchased a knife in a Zagreb shop and inflicted the wound on herself, fully aware that filing a false report constituted a criminal offence. Zagreb Police Department said.
As a result, police will file a regular criminal complaint with the competent Municipal State Attorney’s Office on suspicion of falsely reporting a criminal offence under Article 304, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code.
Once it was established that the injury was self-inflicted, officers called for emergency medical assistance. Following a doctor’s assessment, the woman was transported to an appropriate medical facility for further care.
Police have also issued a firm clarification regarding inaccurate reports circulating in some media outlets, which claimed that a nun had been attacked by an unknown man.
Investigators have confirmed these claims to be entirely unfounded.
As no criminal offence was committed against the 35-year-old woman, Zagreb Police have fully refuted such reports.
