The first snow of the season fell this morning on Platak, the popular Croatian ski resort and excursion spot above Rijeka.

Cameras from Radeševo, the mountain’s peak, showed a light but visible white blanket forming, marking the return of snow to the area, writes Glas Istre.

The autumn blizzard also touched lower parts of the resort, with snowflakes seen falling on the car park and ski slopes at Pribeniš, although the ground there has not yet fully turned white.

Early-October snow is not unusual for Platak and the Gorski Kotar region, this year’s first fall arrives after a short hiatus, prompting speculation from meteorologists that Croatia could be in for a colder and snowier winter than in recent years.

Temperatures have dropped sharply in recent days. In Rijeka, the morning temperature was around 8°C, while on Platak it hovered close to 0°C, confirming the arrival of a strong cold front over the region.

Temperatures across the country were close to 0°C yesterday morning, and even minuses on the coast.

With more precipitation expected in the coming days, locals and ski enthusiasts are watching closely to see whether Platak’s first thin white layer will soon turn into a proper winter cover.
