The people of the Croatian city of Vukovar celebrated Vukovar Day and the day of its patrons saints Filip and Jakov, who have been the protectors of the city since 1723.

After a two-year break, traditional activities marking Vukovar’s birthday returned on Tuesday.

The day traditionally began with a performance of Johann Strauss’ “On the beautiful blue Danube”, which passed through the streets of Vukovar on a mobile loudspeaker in the early morning hours.

This was followed by paying tribute to all Croatian defenders of Vukovar at the Memorial Cemetery to the Victims of the Homeland War, and a Holy Mass was served in the church of St. Filip and Jakov.
