The mayor of the central Croatian city of Bjelovar, Dario Hrebak, has announced the approval of the long-awaited ‘Terme Bjelovar’ project, worth a total of 38 million euros, excluding VAT.

The thermal spa project, which also includes an Olympic-sized pool for professional swimmers, is seen as significant for tourism development in the city, especially with the recent influx of foreign tourists attracted by luxury accommodations and apartments in Bjelovar.

Terme Bjelovar’s director, Zvonimir Žarec, emphasised the project’s sustainability, being Croatia’s only greenfield project without any gas pipelines.

He believes the city will reap significant benefits once the spa is operational, with a construction timeline of 18 months from the start date, expected to be completed by 2026.

In addition to Terme Bjelovar, the City of Bjelovar is working on the “Garden House” project, a small tourist village near Terme. This project aims to blend modern amenities with traditional elements of Bjelovar’s heritage, including 35 hospitality apartments, bio pools, and various attractions like lakes, sensory gardens, and outdoor theatres.

The Garden House project, valued at approximately 6.6 million euros, will be partly financed through the ITU mechanism, with the rest covered by the City of Bjelovar. The initiative seeks to reintegrate nature into daily life and provide spaces for socialising and recreation.

Construction will prioritise natural materials such as wood and brick, with a focus on environmental sustainability. A lake, situated along the old Bjelovacka riverbed, will be part of the complex, enhancing its appeal.
