Marin Čilić pulls out of Wimbledon due to COVID

Croatia’s number one tennis player, Marin Čilić, has withdrawn from Wimbledon after he got COVID-19.

The 33-year-old, who has been in vintage form in 2022, reaching the semi-finals of the French Open last month, announced on Instagram on Monday afternoon that he will not be taking part this year.

“Hey guys, I am sad to share that I tested positive for COVID. I have been self-isolating and was hopeful I would be ready but unfortunately I am still feeling unwell & unable to compete at my best. I am heartbroken to be missing Wimbledon & to see my grass season end this way. Looking forward to competing again next year,” Čilić wrote on Instagram.

Čilić, who reached the final of Wimbledon in 2017, has been in great form this season. Apart from his run at the French Open, he also reached the semi-finals of Queens two weeks later on grass.

Croatia is now without a player in the men’s draw after Borna Ćorić pulled out also due to an injury.

Donna Vekić, Petra Martić and Jana Fett carry Croatia’s hopes in the women’s draw.
