Learning Croatian: Phrase of the Week

Croatia212

You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation…

Our ‘Word / Phrase of the Week’ will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.

Today’s Phrase:

Bolje sam se udala nego sam se nadala

Literal translation: I married better than I hoped to.

Wiki

Explanation:
I heard this phrase first on the island of Ugljan. It is used to describe any situation where reality exceeds expectations. For example when you purchase something in the supermarket, and the cashier tells you it is discounted (which you previously didn’t know).

If you have a candidate for ‘Word / Phrase of the Day’, then submit them to croatiaweek1@gmail.com to be published.
