Learning Croatian: Phrase of the Day

You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation. Croatia Week is launching its ‘Word / Phrase of the Day’ today, where we will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.

Today’s Phrase:

Croatia Week
– nit’ smrdi, nit’ miriše (pron: neet smirdi, neet me-re-share)

The slang term ‘nit’ smrdi, nit’ mirise’ is commonly used when something or someone has no substance, no defining qualities, is plain, not bad or good. Literal translation is to ‘neither stink, nor smell good’.

Examples: The new Presidential candidate nit’ smrdi, nit’ miriše.
The new film I went to see last night nit’ smrdi, nit’ miriše
