Zagreb’s long-awaited stadium redevelopment in Kranjčevićeva Street has officially entered a new stage of construction, signalling visible progress on one of the city’s key sports infrastructure projects.
Mayor Tomislav Tomašević visited the site this week to inspect the works, which have been underway for six months.
“After more than 55 years since the last football stand was built, Zagreb will finally have a new stadium in Kranjčevićeva by the end of next year. The removal of the old stadium began in April, and with the first support column now installed on the northern stand, the project has entered a new phase of above-ground construction,” the Mayor said during the visit.
The new Kranjčevićeva Stadium will be a modern, fully covered sports arena with a capacity of 11,163 seats.
The €38 million project (excluding VAT) is being entirely financed from the city budget.

With pitch dimensions of 105 by 68 metres, the stadium will meet UEFA Category 4 standards, allowing it to host major international matches.
Mayor Tomašević emphasised that sustainability and efficiency are central to the design.
The façade will feature durable aluminium profiles requiring minimal maintenance, while vertical gardens and a range of eco-friendly solutions will be incorporated throughout the complex.

New public square and community benefits
Beyond the stadium itself, the project also includes significant improvements to the surrounding public space.
The Trešnjevka neighbourhood will gain a new 6,300 m² square along Kranjčevićeva Street and a car park with over 400 spaces, which will be open for public use when matches are not being held.

Once completed, it will pave the way for the demolition and construction of a new Maksimir Stadium, expected to begin later this decade. The new Maksimir is planned for completion in 2029, in cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Croatia.

A public international architectural and urban design competition for that project is due to be launched soon.
