Joško Gvardiol signs for Manchester City

Croatia international Joško Gvardiol has become the most expensive centre-back in history after his transfer from Leipzig to Manchester City was officially announced today.

The 21-year-old’s move to the English and European champions is for a record fee for a centre-back.

The Croatian was Pep Guardiola’s biggest wish this summer and the deal, reportedly worth €92m surpasses the €87m which Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire.

Gvardiol will have some Croatian company at City as he joins his national team team-mate Mateo Kovačić, who signed for them earlier in the summer.

Gvardiol, who had a sensational World Cup, moved to Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb and has played 59 times for the Bundesliga club. Dinamo Zagreb will also benefit from the transfer with a clause in the player’s contact meaning they will receive a percentage of the deal.

He made his debut for Croatia in 2021 and has been capped 21 times for his country, scoring twice, including in the third-place playoff against Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
