Ivan Rakitić wins best goal of UEFA Champions League Group Stage

20 December 2018 – Croatian international Ivan Rakitić has won ‘Goal of the Champions League Group Stage’ in a UEFA poll, it was announced on Thursday. 

Rakitić’s stunning volley against Tottenham was recognised as the best goal scored in the UEFA Champions League group stage 2018/19.

The midfielder’s long-range strike, which came in Barcelona’s 4-2 win over Tottenham at Wembley stadium,  had already been selected as the best goal of matchday two in the Champions League. 

The award was voted on in an online fan poll on UEFA.com. Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembélé, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mauro Icardi were the other finalists. 

Rakitić was also recently named as a nominee in the UEFA team of the year and was ranked the 13th best player in the world by The Guardian.
