Zagreb Cathedral, an imposing structure that dominates the city’s skyline, has undergone a transformation with the addition of new scaffolding around its spires. Both spires have now been incased in a maze-like structure with the Croatian flag flying from the top.

This scaffolding, hailed as one of the most impressive in the world, has unexpectedly become an attraction in itself.

Interestingly, the presence of scaffolding has become an indelible collective association with the Zagreb Cathedral. For decades, the construction scaffolding has played a role in shaping the city’s vision. Except for a few brief intervals, most recently in November 2022 when the previous scaffolding was removed to make way for the current one, the cathedral has not been “naked” since 1990.

The people of Zagreb have long forgotten what the structure truly looks like, and the younger generations have never witnessed it without the supportive embrace of metal reinforcements.

The spires of Zagreb Cathedral were damaged in the 2020 earthquake, with two crosses, each weighing over a tonne, placed on top not long after to mark a new phase of the restoration on the cathedral.

The sight of the cathedral enveloped in scaffolding has garnered such fascination that a petition  Let’s keep the scaffolding on the Zagreb Cathedral – PERMANENTLY! was humorously initiated.
