20 January 2022 – Croatia’s hopes at the 2022 EHF European Men’s Handball Championship are all but over after defeat to Montenegro on Thursday in Budapest.

Croatia turned on their worst performance so far in the tournament and were flat from the start. Montenegro, who were impressive in group play, quickly took the lead and would dominate the first half.

With their keeper Nebojša Simić in great form, Montenegro went into the break with a 6-goal lead 15-9.

In the second half it was Simić again who denied Croatia a number of times and did not allow them to get any momentum to turn around the lead.

In the end, Montenegro would win comfortably 32-26.

Croatia have three more games remaining but are all but out of semi-final contention.
