German Bundesliga club unveils Croatian style kit

German Bundesliga club Mainz has unveiled their new home kit for the upcoming season and it strikes a glaring resemblance to the Croatian kit.

It is not the first time the Mainz kit has featured the distinctively Croatian red and white checkers. Back in the 1996/97 season the club wore red and white checkers and they have decided to bring it back this season again.

The club’s kit sponsor is Jako, and the kit will likely attract a lot of attention among Croatians in Germany. Some may even purchase it. Interestingly, one of the photos posted on the official Mainz Instagram page shows current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wearing the famous Croatian-style Mainz kit from the 1996/97 season.

It was precisely this kit that inspired Mainz’s new kit for the 2023-4 Bundesliga season.

“Are these Croatian shirts?” “They are identical to the Croatian kit.” “You stole Croatia.” These were just some of the comments, while others wondered whether the club’s designers consciously or unconsciously channeled elements reminiscent of one of the most recognisable symbols of Croatian football.

The jersey is priced at 85 euros, and its Bundesliga premiere will take place on August 26th when Mainz plays their first home match against Eintracht.
