Food poisoning forces Čilić out of quarterfinal against Djoković at Madrid Open

MADRID, 10 May 2019 – Marin Čilić has withdrawn from today’s quarterfinal match against world no.1 Novak Djoković at the Madrid Open. 

Čilić was struck with food poisoning overnight and was unable to take to the court today. He apologised to fans, organisers and Djoković on social media. 

“Madrid Open organizers, spectators and Novak Djoković, I am sorry to announce that I must withdraw from today’s match. I have had a terrible night dealing with a case of food poisoning. I am extremely disappointed to have my time in Madrid end in this way. Thank you for the support and I look forward to returning next year,” Čilić wrote on Instagram. 

After a an extended period being out of form, Croatia’s number one ranked tennis player put together three wins in a row to reach the quarterfinal of the Madrid Open.

The 30-year-old got past Slovakia’s Martin Kližen in the first round, winning a tie-breaker in the third set, before coming from a set down to beat Jan-Lennard Struff in the Round of 32 and Serbia’s Laslo Đere in the Round of 16 yesterday. 

In the other quarterfinals, Roger Federer plays Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas meets Alexander Zverev, and Rafael Nadal faces Stan Wawrinka.
