Since its formation in 1978, Folklorna Grupa Mladi Hrvati has been an integral part of cultural life for Australian-Croatians in Melbourne.

The group was initially formed so that the Croatian youth of Melbourne had a place to socialise and stay connected while at the same time, learn about their Croatian culture and heritage.

Folklorna Grupa Mladi Hrvati believes that Croatia’s folkloric culture and family traditions play an important role for all of us who share a common link to Croatia. Through folklore, we are able to celebrate our past and tell the stories of our ancestors that have shaped who we are as a people today.

Their youngest members are at the heart of everything they do. Folklorna Grupa Mladi Hrvati believes that the best way for children to learn about their culture, language and heritage is through song and dance and they aim to pass on the many Croatian folkloric traditions to our younger generations.

While technology has connected Croatia’s diaspora in a way that has never been experienced before, it is the cultural links that will help younger generations understand their ancestry and embrace their traditions and customs.

In 2018, the group will be celebrating its 40th year. To mark this significant milestone, they have launched a promotional video to showcase the beauty of our cultural history, which also highlights the importance of preserving our culture for future generations.

The video (below) was filmed at the beginning of the year alongside a photoshoot that took place for a special 2018, 40th-anniversary commemorative calendar that the group has just released.

Each month of the commemorative calendar celebrates a different region of Croatia, with their members showcasing traditional costumes in timeless, European settings. Calendars are available for purchase both locally in Australia, as well as internationally through the group’s website.
