ZAGREB, 17 Nov (Hina) – A multimedia exhibition of photos made by foreign photojournalists in wartime Vukovar in 1991 opened on Sunday in Vukovar. Mayor Marijan Pavliček said the images depict the city and its people during moments of both immense tragedy and courage.
“We have a duty to tell future generations also through exhibitions like this what happened in Vukovar in 1991. This truth is often distorted even within Croatian society, let alone across the Danube,” Pavliček said at the opening.
The exhibition features works by photojournalists Delmi Alvarez, David Pratt, Laurent Van der Stockt, Steve Chapman-Bertelli, Philippe Lobjois, and Jean-Louis Ravalet, who captured the harsh reality of Vukovar during the war.

Many of the displayed photos have never been publicly shown before, and their being put on display was made possible owing to years of dedicated collection efforts led by Josip Deur and Darko Galić.
Deur noted that the initial contact with the foreign reporters was facilitated by Ivan Anđelić, one of the commanders of Vukovar’s defence.

“Without their dedication and the group ‘Istina obrane Vukovara’ (Truth about Vukovar’s defence), many photos would never have seen the light of day,” he said, stressing the exhibition aims to present the truth of the events in Vukovar in 1991.

The exhibition will also be available online via the “Truth about Vukovar’s defence” group. “We wanted the photos to reach survivors and families who have been searching for images of their loved ones for years,” Deur added.
