If you have never taken part in a grape harvest in Croatia, this September brings the perfect opportunity.

From 5 – 7 September, the 58th Ilok Grape Harvest Festival will take place in the historic wine-growing region of Srijem, offering visitors a blend of culture, tradition, gastronomy and, of course, outstanding wines.

One of the highlights is the programme “Berem, berem grožđe” (“I Pick, I Pick Grapes”), held on the second day of the festival, 6 September.

Early in the morning, guests will join locals in the vineyards for a hands-on experience of grape picking, just as it was done in times gone by – with laughter, song and teamwork.

Organised by the association Posjeti Ilok, the day begins with an outdoor breakfast, followed by grape picking under expert guidance, and finishes with traditional grape-stomping and must-making.

For those more inclined towards tasting than picking, Ilok’s wines will be the star of the festival. At the Wine Fair and throughout numerous tasting events, visitors will enjoy some of Croatia’s finest varieties.

Among them are Graševina, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Silvanac and Traminer, as well as red wines such as Pinot Noir, Frankovka and Cabernet Sauvignon. The town’s renowned Traminac holds a special place in Ilok’s winemaking tradition – it was famously served at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

Gastronomy is also central to the Ilok experience. Local hunting and fishing associations will prepare traditional dishes, with a focus on river fish specialities such as fiš, alongside hearty meat and game dishes including čobanac, Srijem sausage and Ilok ćevap.

Paired with a glass of Ilok wine and views over the Danube, it makes for a truly unforgettable atmosphere.

The festival unfolds within the medieval old town of Ilok, a national heritage site of the highest category. Its unique charm provides the perfect backdrop for three days of celebration, tradition and enjoyment.

Gather your friends, pack your bags and head to Ilok from 5 – 7 September to experience the 58th Ilok Grape Harvest Festival – a celebration where wine, history and culture come together in the most memorable way.
