European Youth Olympics: Croatian swimmer wins double gold & sets new record

BAKU, 24 July 2019 – Young Croatian swimmer Franko Grgic has won two gold medals for Croatia at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Grgic first won the gold medal in the 400m before breaking a new EYOF record to win gold in the 1500m freestyle event just two days later. 

The swimmer from Split powered past the field to finish the 1500m final to win in a time of 15.04.75, beating the old record of 15:24.02. David Betlehem from Hungary was second in a time of 15:15.60, whilst Germany’s Silas Beth was third in a time of 15:20.58.

In the 400m final, Grgic set a Croatian record and was was 12 milliseconds off the EYOF record when he won in a time of 3:52:10. In second place was Silas Beth (3:52.63) and Greece’s Alexandros Kachris (3:53.53) was third.
