EU To Deploy Oil Spill Protection Vessel In The Adriatic

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) plan to deploy a vessel to be stationed in the Adriatic to protect Croatia from potential damage from oil tankers or oil spills. It is not yet clear whether the vessel will be stationed on the Croatian or Italian side of the coast.

A public tender for the contract is about to be opened with companies from Croatia also allowed to apply. EMSA has a budget of over 58.8 million euros at its disposal. Currently Croatia has at its disposal the specially prepared tankers “Balluta Bay” and “Santa Maria” stationed in Malta in the case of any oil tanker or oil spill damage to its waters.

Croatia recently announced new laws to make oil exploration and exploitation possible on the Adriatic coast.
