Dalić: No Gvardiol, Kovačić or Stanišić for Faroe Islands tomorrow

Croatia continue their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign on Friday evening when they face the Faroe Islands in Tórshavn. Kick-off is at 20:45.

This will be the third match for Zlatko Dalić’s side in Group L. The Vatreni made a strong start in June, recording two emphatic wins – a 7:0 away victory over Gibraltar, followed by a convincing 5:1 triumph against Czechia at Osijek’s Opus Arena.

Croatia, who have returned from the last two World Cups with silver and bronze medals, head into the match as clear favourites, but Dalić insists there will be no underestimating the opposition.

“We have full respect for our opponent. Every match is important and this one is the most important for us right now. The Faroe Islands do not have the same quality as us, but they are disciplined and showed their strength against Montenegro and Czechia. We are not expecting an easy match,” said Dalić at the pre-match press conference.

The coach confirmed that some changes would be made, with Mateo Kovačić, Joško Gvardiol, and Josip Stanišić unavailable, while Josip Juranović is struggling with an injury. Nevertheless, he stressed that Croatia must remain focused.

“We cannot afford to underestimate anyone. We must watch out for long balls and set-pieces. Matches like this can be very tricky – there is not much to gain, but a lot to lose,” Dalić added.

Captain Luka Modrić is expected to start, with the coach emphasising Croatia’s ability to adapt to different styles of play.

Defender Marin Pongračić, who will be looking to take his chance, echoed the coach’s words.

“We came here for three points. The conditions are different to what we are used to, but we are highly motivated. Every minute is important to me, and I hope to make the most of my opportunity,” said the Fiorentina defender.

He underlined the importance of patience and creativity against a defensive opponent.

“We expect to face a low block and will need to play fast, creative football. Scoring the first goal will be crucial, but at the back we must remain responsible and careful, because in football anything can happen,” Pongračić concluded.

Croatia will be aiming to maintain their perfect start and strengthen their position at the top of the group ahead of the next qualifier in three days’ time against Montenegro in Zagreb.
