Croatians in Australia to join day of unity, pride & joy celebrations on 16 July

12 July, 2019 – The biggest street party in Croatia’s history took place on 16 July 2018 when around half a million people took to the streets to celebrate the return of the World Cup runners-up. Streets and squares in Zagreb were packed with people decked out in red and white checkers waving Croatian flags and singing songs.

It was a welcome home party like no another and it created memories that will remain for life for the players and to keep the feeling alive and remember a special time in the nation’s history, Ivan Rakitic, Zlatko Dalic and others have called on Croatians to celebrate 16 July as a day of unity, pride & joy, and to once again put on their red and white checkers and go out on the streets to unite on the one-year anniversary of the spectacular party.

“All together everyone, on 16 July put on your checkers and go out onto the streets. Let’s celebrate unity, pride and joy day. With our national team, Croatia is full of life, let’s show that,” Rakitic said.

The Croatian community in Melbourne, Australia have answered Rakitic’s call and are joining in on the celebrations. Croatian Catholic Centre Sunshine in Melbourne are organising an event to celebrate unity, pride & joy day on 16 July.

A party will be thrown at the Croatian Catholic Centre Sunshine in Melbourne with doors opening at 6:30 pm.

“Let us celebrate the anniversary of our amazing World Cup journey. Come in your checkers and jerseys,” organisers said. Everyone is welcome, and apart from food and drinks, there will be highlights from the World Cup shown throughout the night.
