It is the one day of the year that Hollywood comes to a standstill. This Sunday marks Hollywood’s most important awards show, the 85th Academy Awards, known more affectionately as the Oscars. A lot is already known about the big stars involved at this year’s glitzy glam event such as Denzel Washington, Daniel Day-Lewis and Hugh Jackman, but little is known about the Croatians who have an involvement at this year’s Oscars “behind the scenes”. Lets take a look at them.
Tomislav Torjanac – Not excatly a household name, but the Croatian artist from Nasice in eastern Slavonia illustrated Yann Martel’s Booker award-winning novel, Life of Pi, which director Ang Lee based his 3D adventure drama on. Life of Pie has earned eleven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Visual Effects and Best Adapted Screenplay. In 2006 Torjanac won an international competition run by UK newspaper The Times, Australian newspaper The Age, Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail and Scottish publisher Canongate Books, to be selected to illustrate Martel’s book.
IDM Music Croatia – The international music publishing company headquartered in Zagreb teamed up with Quentin Tarantino’s music supervision crew once again and licensed another piece of art for his latest hit: “Django Unchained”. The film starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson has received five Oscar nominations this year. IDM Music Croatia have provided soundtracks for Tarantino films in the past.
Ivana Primorac – The Croatian make-up artist and hairstylist worked on the film Ana Karenina, staring Keira Knightly and Jude Law, which has received four Oscar nominations. Primorac is no stranger to awards, she has sixth BAFTA nominations under her belt, after impressing during the shooting of films The Hours, Cold Mountain, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd and Atonement, where she has made-up and styled stars such as Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, Johnny Depp and Knightly.
