Croatians become world bocce champions in Turkey

10 November 2019 – Croatia has two new world champions in the sport of bocce after the 2019 World Bocce Championships ended in Turkey this weekend. 

Marin Cubela, who was taking part at his first ever world championships, won gold to become world champion in the singles classic event. This was the first time in Croatian bocce history that a gold was won in this event. 

In the final, Cubela beat defending champion Montemerlo Guillermo.  On his way to the final he also beat multiple world champion Jure Kozjek in the quarter-final. 

Meanwhile, Darian Zivolic is the new world champion in the speed shooting discipline.

After beating Rogger in the semi-final, Darijan beat Argentina’s Lucas Hecker to win gold. He also claimed bronze in the relay event in Turkey. This was the second time Croatia has won gold in this event after Valter Ivancic won gold at the world champs in Canada.

Zivolic is the first Croatian to claim gold in the speed shooting and relay events.

There were 96 bocce players from 23 countries taking part in the world championships with Croatia the most successful nation.
