Croatian language and culture studies in British Columbia

Last year, British Columbia Croatian launched their first ever distance learning model for Croatian language and culture studies in British Columbia.

The course was delivered by Croaticum (Centre for Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb) in which professors at the University of Zagreb delivered a synchronous, interactive Croatian language and culture course for beginners.

Upon successful completion of the course, students received a certificate from Croaticum, which can be accredited as an external course on their high school transcript. In addition, successful attainment of this course fulfills the second language requirements for admission into University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU).

Due to the success of last year’s beginner language and culture program, Croaticum is happy to expand its course offerings with a new advanced Croatian language and cultures course for high school students in British Columbia.

The Crodiaspora Croatian program, formerly known as British Columbia Croatian, is actively working to expand to other provinces in Canada, the United States, Oceania and South America in order to allow students across the globe to benefit from Croaticum’s program.

This year, Croaticum is pleased to offer online Beginner Croatian Language and Culture Course on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-10 pm (PST) and online Advanced Croatian Language and Culture Course on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-10 pm (PST).

Classes will commence the week of October 3, 2022, and will end January 27, 2023. Sessions are instructed by professors through the Croaticum program at the University of Zagreb. The Canadian Croatian Chamber of Commerce (British Columbia Chapter) will award students scholarships upon the start date.

The deadline to register for classes is September 20, 2022. Upon registration, students will be assessed for their level of proficiency in both oral and written language skills, after which they will be placed in either the beginner or advanced courses.
