Pula, 25 November 2022 – The Croatian company Skira from Pula, which specialises in lighting design, had the honour of lighting this year’s Christmas nativity scene that will decorate St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican from 3 December 2022 until 8 January 2023.
The traditional ceremony of unveiling the nativity scene and lighting the Christmas tree will be held in front of high representatives of the Vatican on Saturday, 3 December at 5 p.m.
The ceremony will be presided over by Cardinal Fernando Vérgez Alzaga, president of the Vatican City State Administration, with the general secretary of the Administration, Sr. Raffaella Petrini, and the presence of representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia to the Holy See.
That morning, Pope Francis will receive delegations from Sutri, Rosella and Guatemala, among whom will be award-winning Croatian designer Dean Skira and his colleagues Božidar Pustijanac and Godvin Poropat.
The “Christmas Nativity scene in the Vatican 2022” will come from the town of Sutri and include 18 life-size statues appropriately illuminated for the ceremonial opening.
The wood sculptures were made by a team of artists from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, among them the artistic director Stefano Comellia and Oleksander Shteyninher, a Ukrainian artist living in Italy.
The collaboration on the staging of the birth of Jesus started from the recommendation of Italian colleagues who recognised that for the lighting of the staging of the birth of Jesus it is necessary to have competence in creative solutions and experience with technologically demanding projects in order to highlight the beauty and warmth of natural materials with light.
“Light is an important part of the Christmas celebrations, so our designer was especially inspired to contribute to the overall Christmas atmosphere on St. Peter’s Square. The light scenography that narratively accompanies and complements this year’s artistic interpretation of the nativity scene will appear every night after dusk, like the star of Bethlehem after the birth of Jesus,” Skira said.
Skira have worked on a number of award-winning lighting projects in Croatia and abroad, including for the London underground tunnels, Eurasia tunnel, the GTC Matrix twin office buildings in Zagreb and the Pula shipyards.
