Croatian city’s Valentine’s tradition for couples married 50+ years continues

For the thirteenth consecutive year, the beautiful tradition of celebrating Valentine’s Day for couples married more than 50 years in the Croatian city of Vukovar continued.

This year, 41 couples celebrated their long-standing love by enjoying music and dance. The celebration was held last night, the day before Valentine’s Day since February 14 marks the beginning of Lent.

Vukovar Mayor Ivan Penava wished his fellow citizens many more years of health and love, emphasising that they are a true example of unity.

“We wanted to celebrate unity and love through song, dance, and joy. Love is built throughout life; it doesn’t need to be idealised, but it’s worth striving for and giving oneself to. The marital union and family, as well as good friends, offer us a certain security. These are top values that we need to nurture and highlight,” emphasised Mayor Penava.

The Valentine’s celebration was special for Vukovar spouses, Marija and Ivan Bertok, who, among those who applied, are the couple with the most years of married life.

Marija and Ivan were married in 1954, and this year they celebrate 70 years of marriage. Additionally, they won the traditional game “Dance of Hearts,” for which the City of Vukovar awarded them with a special gift.
