Croatia secures second victory at 2019 Fed Cup in England

7 February 2019 – Croatia has recorded its second victory at the 2019 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group I event in Bath, England. 

After beating Turkey 2-1 on Wednesday in their opening pool match, Iva Majoli’s team has defeated Georgia on Thursday also 2-1 to remain unbeaten after two days.

Ana Konjuh was first on court for Croatia and was too good for Georgia’s Mariam Balkvadze, winning comfortably in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in just under 1 hour and 20 minutes.

With Croatia’s no.1 Donna Vekić being rested, Jana Fett was selected to play the second singles rubber. After winning the first set, and then having the chance to serve for the match, she would eventually go down 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to Ekaterine Gorgodze.

Doubles pairing Ana Konjuh and Darija Jurak would give Croatia the victory when they beat Oksana Kalashnikova and Ekaterine Gorgodz in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.

On Wednesday, world no.25 Vekić, and the doubles combination of Jana Fett and Darija Jurak helped Croatia beat Turkey. 

Croatia will meet Serbia in their final pool match on Friday. The winners of the pool will face the winner of pool A which features Great Britain, Greece, Slovenia and Hungary on Saturday to determine which nation will be promoted to the World Group II play-offs.
