Croatia has officially completed its section of the European transport Corridor Vc, with the final stretch of the A5 motorway – known as Slavonika – now open to traffic from Beli Manastir to the Hungarian border.
The newly opened section, 5 kilometres long, marks the end of nearly two decades of construction on the strategic north–south route connecting Budapest with the Adriatic port of Ploče.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković attended the official opening, joined by ministers David Vlajčić and Ivan Anušić, to mark the milestone achievement.
A Boost for Eastern Croatia
The completion of the A5 motorway is seen as a significant development for Osijek, Slavonia, and the wider eastern region of Croatia. By linking Slavonia directly to the European transport network, the corridor is expected to drive new economic opportunities, strengthen trade, and improve connectivity across the region.
A Challenging Section Completed
Construction of the final segment, just under six kilometres in length, took two and a half years due to complex terrain and demanding engineering conditions. The total investment for this stretch was approximately €46 million, HRT said.
The project involved several key structures, including bridges and the Dukat viaduct, which were among the most technically challenging elements of the route.
A Long-Term Project Reaches Completion
Work on the A5 motorway began in 2005 at the Sredanci interchange and progressed through stages connecting Sredanci, Đakovo, and Osijek. In December 2022, the Osijek–Beli Manastir section was opened, paving the way for today’s completion of the final segment to the Hungarian border.
With the opening of this last section, Croatia has successfully completed its part of the Corridor Vc motorway link between Hungary and the Adriatic, providing a continuous route from Budapest to the Port of Ploče – a major step in improving Central European transport connectivity.
