Croatia has beaten Spain for the first time to reach the semifinals of Davis Cup.

Marin Čilić and Borna Ćorić sent Croatia into the Davis Cup semifinals on Wednesday in Malaga with two impressive victories.

First up on court was Ćorić and the 26-year-old would give Croatia a 1-0 lead when he upset Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Hitting 12 aces in the match, the Croatian said after the win that it was his serve that made the difference.

“Today, I felt very, very well on the serve and I think in the end that’s what made the difference,” he said.

Čilić was next up on court against Pablo Carreno Busta and after looking down and out in the deciding tiebreak, he would come back and win 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to send Croatia into the semifinals.

“It’s an incredible effort by the team. It’s such a great privilege and honor to bring another point for the team Croatia and seal the win against the always strong Spanish team,” Čilić said.

Croatia had met Spain on three previous occasions with the Spanish triumphant in all three. Croatia now faces Australia in the semifinals on Friday.

Croatia is currently ranked no.1 in the Davis Cup rankings, thanks to great results during the last four seasons with a title win in 2018 and finishing runners-up in 2021.
