Croatia’s table tennis teams have achieved an historic result at the World Mixed Team Cup in Chengdu, securing a place among the top eight nations in the world.
The Croatian squad recorded another impressive victory on Wednesday, defeating Australia 8:3 and confirming their progression to the second phase of the competition even before their final group fixture.
This marks a historic moment for Croatian table tennis. In their debut appearance at the mixed-format World Cup, a tournament set to join the Olympic programme in Los Angeles in 2028, Croatia have surpassed expectations and emerged as one of the world’s elite.
Adding further weight to the achievement is the fact that Europe was limited to sending only its top five teams, with Croatia entering the draw as the lowest-ranked side.
Next up for Croatia is a clash with powerhouse Japan . The Japanese team also hold two victories, including an 8:4 win over India, and are regarded as one of the tournament favourites.
For Croatia, however, the encounter promises to be a welcome opportunity to test themselves against top-tier opposition without added pressure, a chance to enjoy the occasion and continue showcasing their quality on the world stage.
In the second stage, all group winners and runners-up merge into a single group in which every team plays each other. Results from the first phase are carried over and not repeated. The top four nations from this stage advance to the semi-finals, where the knockout rounds begin.
