When it comes to watermelon production in the European Union, Croatia stands among the top players, holding the 8th position in terms of the sheer amount of this juicy and refreshing fruit it contributes to the market. 

According to recent statistics published by Eurostat, Croatia’s watermelon production has been thriving, placing it among the top ten producers in the EU.

Spain is the key producer of this fruit in the EU. It produced almost half (45.4%) of watermelons. In second place is Italy with more than a quarter (25.6%) of watermelons. 

Italy is followed by Greece and Romania, and Croatia is in 8th place. In 2022, 24 thousand tons of watermelons were produced in Croatia.

Watermelon cultivation in Croatia has a long history and Over the centuries, farmers in Croatia have honed their agricultural techniques, optimising watermelon production and contributing to the overall watermelon market. Popular growing areas in Croatia include the Neretva valley, Komin near Ploče, Knin, and parts of Dalmatia.  

The reasons behind Croatia’s success in watermelon production can be attributed to several factors. The country’s diverse climate zones play a pivotal role in providing various growing conditions suitable for watermelon cultivation.
