Best moments in Croatian sport in 2020 

According to data from the Croatian Olympic Committee, Croatian athletes won 91 medals, of which 26 were gold, 25 silver and 40 bronze at world and European championships and cups in 2020 in various sports across all age categories. 

2020 will be remembered as a year that a number of major sporting events were cancelled, like Euro 2020 and Wimbledon. Sport, like the rest of the world, came to a standstill in March. 

Below are the highlights for Croatian sport in 2020. 

January 

Croatia won the silver medal at the 2020 European Men’s Handball Championship after a 22-20 loss to Spain in the final in Stockholm.

February 

Filip Zubcic wins the men’s World Cup giant slalom in Japan.

Tonci Stipanovic wins the bronze medal at the World Laser Championships in Melbourne. 

September 

Croatia’s Mate Pavić and Brazil’s Bruno Soares win the US Open doubles title.

October 

Brothers Martin and Valent Sinković win the silver medal in the Men’s Pair final at the European Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland.

Croatian gymnasts Christina Zwicker on the beam and Tin Srbić on the horizontal bar win gold medals at the World Cup in Szombathely.

Mate Pavić and Bruno Soares runners-up in the doubles at the French Open.

Šime and Mihovil Fantela win bronze at the European Championships in the 49er class.

November 

Croatia qualifies for EuroBasket 2022 after beating Sweden 87-72 in Istanbul.

Mate Pavić and Bruno Soares end 2020 as the world’s No.1 doubles team in tennis.  

Nikola Mektić and his doubles partner Wesley Koolhof win the Nitto ATP Finals trophy in London. Mektić is the first Croatian to capture a trophy at the ATP finals.

December 

Filip Zubcic wins the giant slalom at the men’s International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup in Santa Caterina.

Dinamo Zagreb reaches the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League – they will play Krasnodar from Russia for a place in the last 16 in February. 

Filip Ude, Tin Srbić and Aurel Benović win silver medals at European gymnastics championships in Turkey.

Croatia wins the bronze medal at the 2020 European Women’s Handball Championship in Denmark. It is the first ever medal at a major tournament for Croatian women’s handball.
