Wimbledon 2019: Petra Martic’s run comes to an end

LONDON, 8 July 2019 – Petra Martic’s run at Wimbledon has ended on Monday at the hands of Elina Svitolina. 

After a close opening set, the 8th seed Ukrainian would run away with the match 6-4, 6-2 after Martic would require medical assistance twice in the second set. 

Svitolina was first to break in the fifth game to lead 3-2, but with a series of fantastic drop shots, Martic earned a break point in next game and exquisitely capatilsed with another drop shot to level at 3-3.   

Martic finally went ahead 4-3 in the next game which lasted over 15 minutes and went to deuce 9 times. She would have the chance three times to go 5-3 up when she created three break points but the Ukrainian would get herself out of trouble and levelled at 4-4 with an ace. 

Svitolina would break in the next game to go 5-4 up when she would produce a drop shot winner at 30-40 and would serve out to love to take the opening set 6-4 after more than an hour on court. 

The long rallies in the opening set seemed to take their toll on Martic and the fresher looking Svitolina would break immediately in the second set. 

Martic called for medical assistance at 1-0 down in the second set as she seemed to have discomfort in her lower back. When play resumed after the medical time-out, Svitolina would cement her break to go 2-0 up. 

Svitolina would break again as Martic called for further medical help on her lower back. Despite not being 100% fit, Martic continued on until the end and can be proud of her performance in the tournament this year which equalled her best ever performance at Wimbledon. 

It has been a great year for the Croatian. After winning her first WTA title in Turkey, she reached the quarterfinal of the French Open.
