Croatia extends free train travel to more groups

The Croatian Government has confirmed the continuation of its free public rail transport programme, extending important benefits to several groups of passengers and improving transport connections with Istria.

Under a new Government decision, free public railway transport will continue to be available to children, primary and secondary school pupils, full-time students, pensioners and citizens aged over 65, HŽ Passenger Transport has said in a statement.

In addition, from 1 January 2026, free public rail travel across Croatia is also granted to people with disabilities who hold a National or European Disability Card marked as eligible for train travel.

This marks an important step towards greater accessibility and inclusion within the country’s public transport system.

From January 2026, all eligible passenger categories residing in Istria County will also be able to travel free of charge on direct train services between Pula and Zagreb, despite the route passing through Slovenia (Zagreb – Ljubljana – Pula route).

These direct services were reintroduced on 20 June 2025, restoring a key rail connection between the capital and Istria.

The trains operate on Fridays from Zagreb to Pula and on Sundays from Pula to Zagreb, offering a convenient weekend travel option for residents, students and visitors.

The reintroduction of direct trains removes the need for transfers, providing a safer, more accessible and more comfortable travel option.

The measure is also expected to encourage greater use of public transport while significantly improving rail connectivity for Istria County, HŽ Passenger Transport’s statement said.
